Summary of The Life Changer

Chapter one in the summary of the Life Changer was all about the discussion between Omar, Teemah, Jamila, and their mum. They were discussing educational activities, and The Life Changer. The family were all happy as they continue with their discussion.

Omar was just 18 years old when he got admission to study Law at Kongo Campus of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. The family was glad, and congratulated him for the admission he got. Omar told his siblings not to tell his father about the news yet. Their mother, Ummi Ahmad, proceed to tell them a story about Salma, and her university.

In chapter two of the Life Changer, the mother advised her children about university. She went ahead to explain to them that in university, students are not compulsory to wear uniforms except for law students who have a dress code. Furthermore, she asked Omar to listen carefully. When Omar asked why, she told him that ladies in the university dress almost naked, and he should be very careful. She now continues to tell them a story.

Salma who is a 100 level student went to Dr. Dabo’s office. She went there to meet him so that, he can sign her form as the coordinator. When Dr. Dabo was done signing her form, he gave it to Salma. As Salma was about to leave, Dr. Dabo couldn’t resist her beauty, and then called her back. She came back and sat.

Dr. Dabo went ahead to ask if he can get to know her. Salma simply replied, she is a student in the school. He wasn’t satisfied with the answer and asked her that he wants to know more about her intimately, and for them to be friends. Salma got angry and questioned the attitude of such a man. She asked him if he is not ashamed to ask her out, that she can’t be friends with someone who is old enough to be his father.

She left angrily. Dr. Dabo was shocked at his behavior. He has never attempted such since over 10 years of his stay in the school. He is a good man in the university, and most students respect him a lot because he doesn’t sleep with students. Not only that, but he blamed himself, and further told himself that he don’t need to worry much because he didn’t do anything back. He felt that he just wants to be friends with her and nothing much.

Salma went further to complete her hostel accommodation registration. She wasn’t happy about the room she got because she has to stay with three students. These students were Tomiwa, Ada, and Ngozi. They all later get to know each other. Salma and Tomiwa were Muslim, while Ngozi and Ada were Christians.

During Salma’s final year’s second semester examination, she was caught doing exam malpractice. She was forced to sign the examination malpractice form, as she did not want to sign it. She later implicated Kola, who was her private tutor and classmate. As the case was ongoing, Salma have to meet with a lot of top individuals in the school to see how they can end the case.

She was later invited to the school committee to defend herself. When she came, she was shocked that the ones she gave money to help her resolve the case was not the one in charge. She felt that she have been duped. After a while, the committee told her to commence, and explain what happened in the examination hall.

Salma explained how everything went out in the hall. She didn’t know when she mentioned the name of the boy who passed the paper to her in the exam hall. After everything thing, she was asked to go, and that they will get back to her.

Later, Salma’s father died, and she mourned him. After that, she changed, and decided to live a decent life. Salim got interested in Salma, and told her about his feelings for her. He further told Salma that he wants to marry her too. Salma later agreed to date Salim.

The worst things a university student can do, is to enroll in malpractice. Once you’re caught by the school management, they will expel you. It can create a lot of problems for you as a student. When Salma was caught doing malpractice, she had no rest of mind. She had to bribe some school officials to help her through, which didn’t work out.

Self-control

Once a girl enroll into the university, a lot of boys and lecturers usually comes after them. A lot of men and lecturers approached Salma, which she declined all of them. They were all after her beauty, and busty looks. She had to avoid them to avoid bad events that could occur.

Good character and behavior

Salma never had any major issue until her final year in the school, when she was caught with a paper during an examination. Before then, she behaved well, and avoid what would lead her to trouble.

John holds the cleaning job in a school.

Salma

Moral lesson of The Life Changer by Khadija Abubakar Jalli

The moral lesson of the novel which is ‘The Life Changer’ teaches about good behavior and character. Salma passed a lot of temptation including when she was doing her registration as a 100 level student, but she was able to win and passed such temptation.

Also, examination is bad. A student should be able to read, and write what he or she was taught. As a student, you don’t need to do examination malpractice, as the consequences of that in the university is to expel the student.
